Editor's review
This is a dual tool that can help create backup copies of movie DVDs and let you create a customized copy of movies available in different formats and burn onto a DVD that can be played on a home DVD player.
Extra DVD Copy can copy most SONY ARccOS and CSS (Content Scrambling System) protected DVD-5/DVD-9 type DVD movies to DVD-9(Dual Layer), DVD-5 media. There is no quality loss due to the conversion process. The copies can be made to the local hard drive too. The Extra DVD Creator part of the tool is useful in picking up selective parts of the source DVD and creating a customized one for your use. It will convert videos in AVI, MPEG, WMV and MOV to DVD. You can then burn the content into DVD writable media that can be played on portable or home DVD players. That can help you remove the undesirable parts, such as all those additional audio or sub title tracks and extra content.
The interface provided is intuitive enough. There`s a preview area. The format of the original DVD is indicated. You can select the output format, specify a label, choose to copy to single layer or a dual layer target disk, if subtitles are to be included, include main menu & extras etc. You can also specify if you want all the audio tracks or a selective one. Similarly for the creator, you choose the output format, specify the clip size you need (a start point and an end point) and can complete the process without babysitting. The machine will shut down after the conversion, if you so specify. Overall quite a simple and convenient tool, but it is a shame that it does not support Blu-Ray yet. When breaking the digital rights management for creating a copy, you must remember that creating a back up copy for the title you own may be a legitimate fair use. Not so if you do not own the title.
